The NFL wants to fix overtime, but they don't know how. I have the perfect solution...
The NFL needs to have a shoot out. The concept is simple. Teams go back and forth attempting two point conversions until there is a clear winner. It's the only answer.
Take a minute and think. What's the point of overtime? That's an easy one. You want games to end with a winner and loser. Ties are bad. In the current system teams could play an entire overtime and still tie. It's useless.
Ties are impossible in a shootout.
The next step is to break a tie as quickly as possible. 60 minutes of football is plenty of time to win the good ol' fashioned way. When a game reaches overtime, anything that prevents you from getting a clear winner and loser should be thrown out. Brevity is everything.
The current NFL format is despicable in this regard. They place teams on the opposite end of the field and hope they'll drive 75 yards to score. It's like saying “Let's meet up for lunch! I know a great place in Shanghai.”
The shootout would get to the point. Teams would have one play to go two yards. There's no fluff.
The shootout is also perfectly fair. It doesn't matter who gets the ball first. The days of loathing a coin flip would be done. Going second would be a personal preference instead of a death sentence.
In hockey, the biggest knock against a shootout is that it doesn't happen in the normal course of a game. It's not real hockey. A two point conversion is absolutely a normal football play. Thanks to analytics, it's becoming a more common play every year.
The shootout is the perfect answer to all of the NFL's logistical problems—and oh yeah...IT'D BE FUN AS SHIT!
Imagine the Eagles and Cowboys squaring off in overtime. Wentz and Prescott going tit for tat with the game on the line every single snap. A Dak draw countered with a crosser to Jeffery. A batted pass to Beasley bears a scoring Smallwood sweep. It's must watch television. It's all we ever wanted.
Now we need to make this dream a reality. I tweeted the NFL asking them to read this proposal:
Please retweet it. Together we can get the league's attention and change the game we love for the better. It's time for the #NFLShootout.
